Their skin can display shades from green to gold, featuring unique markings that mimic peacock feathers. A notable eye spot, known as an ocellus, is found on their tail fin. These fish are quite large and can grow impressively. Depending on the species and their surroundings, they may reach lengths of 12 to 30 inches (30 to 76 centimetres) or even larger in the wild. Peacock Bass thrive in freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, and flooded forests across South America. They prefer warm, well-oxygenated waters that provide ample cover from things like submerged plants, fallen trees, and rocks. As fierce predators, they have a broad diet that includes smaller fish, crustaceans, insects, and sometimes small mammals or birds near the water. In captivity, they will eagerly eat live or frozen food like fish, shrimp, and insect larvae. Peacock Bass display strong territorial behaviour, especially during breeding. They are known for their powerful strikes when hooked by anglers. In aquariums, they may show similar aggression, so it is crucial to offer sufficient space and hiding spots. Keeping Peacock Bass in an aquarium demands a large tank with plenty of room and hiding areas. A soft, sandy bottom is preferred, and water temperatures should be maintained between 75-82°F (24-28°C). Good filtration is essential to ensure water quality, as these fish can be messy eaters. Due to their aggressive nature and size, Peacock Bass do not suit community tanks. They may eat smaller fish or be aggressive towards other tank mates. However, they can coexist with larger, sturdy species that can defend themselves.
