Thayer Cichlid 4-5CM Among the largest of the Smiling acaras, thayeri are typically found in natural environments with minimal current and plenty of decaying wood, submerged roots, leaf litter, and in some regions, thick marginal vegetation. The water often takes on a tea-like hue due to the tannins released from decomposing organic matter in the water. The aquarium should be well-established and at least 3 feet long (preferably larger) with a soft sand substrate. It’s important to provide numerous hiding spots among tangles of driftwood, rocky caves, and lush plantings, including some floating species to help soften the light. Filtration should be effective, but the water movement should be relatively gentle, and regular partial water changes should be performed to keep nitrate levels low. When not in breeding mode, these acaras are quite social and can be kept in groups. However, as they approach spawning, pairs will naturally form, and they will become significantly more territorial if they plan to breed. This shouldn’t pose much of a problem in spacious aquariums. Tankmates should be peaceful and of small to medium size (large enough to avoid being eaten, yet small enough not to bother these gentle cichlids). Ideal companions might include Corydoras catfish, hatchetfish, tetras, and suckermouth catfish. The presence of such ‘dither fish’ can encourage these shy cichlids to come out into the open more often. As rare imports, these fish should be provided with soft water that is low in nitrates to maintain their health. Picture is of the fish in stock All sizes are approx
